Elderberry bushes can grow up to 10 feet tall in full sun or partial shade and require fertile, well-draining soil. To grow elderberry, choose a space in your garden that receives at least six hours of sunlight and plant in early spring or fall. You can plant elderberry shrubs from cuttings or small plants, space them 6-10 feet apart in rows and water them regularly. Prune annually in late winter or early spring to promote growth and limit the size of the shrub. Elderberry plants can take 2-3 years before they mature enough to produce fruit, but once they do, they can provide abundant harvests for years to come. Whether used in jams, jellies, or syrups, or taken for their natural health benefits, elderberries are a tasty and rewarding addition to any garden.

We order our elderberry cuttings each year from Riverhills Harvest. However, we’ve found it growing wild here on our new property. We’ll be harvesting our own cuttings during their dormant season.
